May 20, 2013 DWWC Executive Board meeting at the Goodwin House, 5:00 pm.
May 30, 2013 Democratic Women of Wake County will hold a luncheon meeting on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at the NC State University Club, 4200 Hillsborough Street in Raleigh.

Joan Dressler, President of Democratic Women of NC will be the guest speaker. Ms. Dressler will also install the newly elected DWWC officers.

The buffet lines open at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at 12 noon. The cost of the luncheon, payable at the door, is $18 for members, $20 for non-members and $5 for anyone wishing to attend and not eat.

On Saturday, April 27, 2013, Democratic Women of Wake County hosted our 44th Annual Jefferson-Jackson Breakfast at the Hilton North Raleigh/Midtown Hotel, 3415 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh, NC.

Our keynote speaker was Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-WI).

Proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorship packages will be used to help fund democratic candidates in 2013 and 2014 elections.

September 21-23, 2012 DWWC hosted the 52nd Annual Convention of Democratic Women of North Carolina at the North Raleigh Hilton.

The convention kicked off at a special reception with Governor Bev Perdue at the Executive Mansion at 3:30 pm, Friday, September 21.

On Saturday, June 16, 2012, Democratic Women of Wake County hosted our 43rd Annual Jefferson-Jackson Breakfast at the Raleigh Convention Center in downtown Raleigh.

Our keynote speaker was the Honorable Nina Turner, Ohio State Senator. An outspoken advocate of the disenfranchised and underrepresented, Senator Turner champions the issues of education, employment and building vibrant and safe communities. NC Policy Watch Director Chris Fitzsimon and Public Policy Polling Director Tom Jensen spoke to the club about actions by the legislature and the results of the May 8th primary election in NC.

Sarah Preston, Policy Director for ACLU NC, presented details of the major legislation of the 2011 Session that reversed or diminished women’s rights.

November 17, 2011 Democratic Women of Wake County celebrated our 50th anniversary with an evening meeting on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at the NC State University Club, 4200 Hillsborough Street in Raleigh.

The keynote speaker for the anniversary dinner was former State Senator Margaret Dickson (D-Cumberland), the lead plaintiff in one of the lawsuits challenging the Republican Redistricting maps.

October 27, 2011 Democratic Women of Wake County held a luncheon meeting on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at the NC State University Club, 4200 Hillsborough Street in Raleigh.

The program featured two speakers. Jay Parmley, Executive Director of the NC Democratic Party, discussed the results of the October 11 elections. Alex Miller, Equality NC Interim Executive Director, will provided an update on the controversial “Marriage Amendment” recently passed by the NC General Assembly.

The 2011 Betty Ann Knudsen award was presented to Lindy Brown.

September 29, 2011 Democratic Women of Wake County held a luncheon meeting on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at the NC State University Club, 4200 Hillsborough Street in Raleigh.

The program featured a Candidate Forum moderated by Mack Paul, Chair of the Wake Democratic Party. Candidates for the Raleigh City Council, the Cary Town Council and other municipalities in Wake County spoke.

The program featured David Parker, Chair of the NC Democratic Party. The Honorable Margaret Eagles, Wake County District Court Judge, installed new DWWC officers for 2011-2013.

The program featured Raleigh City Councilwomen Mary-Ann Baldwin and Nancy McFarlane and Wake County Commissioner James West. They spoke on the topic “Ten Years from Now in Our Metropolitan Area: What Should and Will it Look Like?”

February 24, 2011 Democratic Women of Wake County held a luncheon meeting on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at the NC State University Club. The guest speaker was Ferrel Guillory, the founder of the Program on Public Life at UNC-Chapel Hill and a former reporter, editorial page editor and columnist for The News and Observer. Mr. Guillory spoke on the current session of the NC General Assembly, focusing on the redistricting and budget battles.

January 27, 2011 Democratic Women of Wake County held a luncheon meeting on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at the NC State University Club. Wake County District Court Judge Kristin Ruth was the featured speaker. Judge Ruth is a frequent speaker at the state and national level and she talked about the use of problem-solving courts in addressing challenging child support issues.

This special event is for members only (no guests, please). There is no cost, but please bring a food item to share. Pat Hawkins is coordinating food items so please contact her by November 30 at 851-0845 or at sphawkins@earthlink.net to let her know what you will bring.

Volunteers needed: Please let Pat know if you would be willing to come early to help to set up or to stay late to clean up.

The program “The Foreclosure Crisis, Housing and the Economy in Wake County” featured guest speakers Nancy Murray, CEO and founder of Builders of Hope, and Roni Boberg, real estate broker with Coldwell Banker HPW.

The program featured District Attorney Colon Willoughby, Jr.; Clerk of the Court, Lorrin Freeman; and District Judges Craig Croom, Margaret Eagles, Keith Gregory and Vince Rozier.

Democratic Women of Wake County presented a program featuring Dee Hatch, NC President of AARP. She is an expert and answered questions: What is really in the health care laws passed in the Spring? Why are some in Congress trying to repeal the big cost-saving provision if they are concerned about the deficit? Do you need to take out more, less or different coverage?

March 24, 2010 Democratic Women of Wake County hosted a special evening meeting on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at the Clarion Hotel State Capital, 320 Hillsborough St., Raleigh.

The program speakers were U.S. Senate candidates: NC Secretary of State Elaine Marshall, former NC State Senator Cal Cunningham, Attorney Kenneth Lewis, Attorney Marcus Williams and Ann Worthy.

The program featured Democrats running for positions on North Carolina’s appellate courts. Judge Jane Gray and attorney Leto Copeley are candidates for the NC Court of Appeals.

Democratic Women of Wake County held their monthly luncheon meeting on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at the NC State University Club, 4200 Hillsborough Street. The program focused on our national health care system. Two health care experts spoke. Sarah Somers is a senior attorney with the National Health Law Program. Lindsay Siler is the NC Director of Organizing for America, a project of the Democratic National Committee. She is involved in activities to organize for health care reform.

Democratic Women of Wake County held their monthly meeting on Thursday evening, October 29, 2009 at the NC State University Club, 4200 Hillsborough Street. The program featured Anna Hayes, author of Without Precedent: The Life of Susie Marshall Sharp. Susie Sharp was the first female Chief Justice of the NC Supreme Court. Quail Ridge Books had books available for purchase and Anna Hayes autographed newly purchased books, as well as those brought to the event.

September 25 - 28, 2009 The 49th Annual Democratic Women of North Carolina State Convention took place at the Hilton Garden Inn in Kitty Hawk, NC. DWWC was well-represented and our club garnered two major awards: Membership (we are the largest club in the state) and Communications (our newsletter, email and announcements efforts).
September 24, 2009 Democratic Women of Wake County held their monthly luncheon meeting on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at the NC State University Club, 4200 Hillsborough Street. The program featured candidates for the Raleigh City Council.
August 27, 2009 Democratic Women of Wake County held their monthly luncheon meeting on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at the NC State University Club. The program featured candidates for the Wake County School Board and a presentation by Richard Fitzgerald from the Raleigh Rescue Mission.

The keynote speaker was David Young, Chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party. New officers for 2009 - 2010 were installed by Brenda Pollard, 3rd VP of Democratic Women of NC.

Democratic Women of Wake County held their monthly luncheon meeting on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at the NC State University Club. The program theme was "What We Do for Women" and the program featured speakers from various women's groups, including Lillian's List and the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
February 26, 2009 Democratic Women of Wake County held their monthly luncheon meeting on February 26, 2009 at the NC State University Club. In honor of Black History Month, Patricia Timmons-Goodson (the first African-American Associate Justice of the NC Supreme Court) was the featured speaker.
January 29, 2009 Democratic Women of Wake County held their monthly luncheon meeting on January 29, 2009 at the NC State University Club. The featured speaker was Raleigh entrepreneur Greg Hatem. His topic was "The Effects of the Global Economy on Wake County."

In these difficult times, members were encouraged to bring canned goods and other food items to help replenish the Food Bank.

November 20, 2008 Democratic Women of Wake County held their monthly luncheon meeting on November 20, 2008 at the NC State University Club, 4200 Hillsborough Street. The featured speaker was North Carolina Democratic Party Chair Jerry Meek.
October 30, 2008 The October luncheon featured a Halloween theme - many attendees wore costumes. In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, members donated items for Interact, including blankets, sheets, towels, and toiletries. The keynote speaker was Walter Dalton, Candidate for Lt. Governor.
